oh yeah, the Fair

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Laborday weekend Brain and I went to the MN State Fair.  We had a good time, but it isn’t as fun as I remember it being.  Maybe I am just too old now.  Maybe I just was just too concerned about doing things on the cheap.  I didn’t even try any of the midway games.  The only game Brian and I played was “spot the horses” in response to Mary’s inability to see any on her trip to the fair this year.  Here is our evidence:

Yeah so after seeing all these horses Brian and I were pretty tired.  Luckily we found a free bench.  Thank goodness for the Anderson family’s generosity!  Melby be sure to thank your folks for us!

All in all we had a good time.  The art in the fine art building was great.  I also enjoyed seeing the crafts in the craft building, and the science experiments in the 4-H building.  After five hours of almost continual walking, both of us called it a day and headed on home.

About town

So this evening Brain and I met up with our friends Gabby and Joong to see the movie “The Fall.” Here is the trailer:

[wp_youtube]QdhGrrPDtoY[/wp_youtube]

Brian thought the film was too long, and Gabby thought it moved too slowly. We did agree that it was visually spectacular. I thought the movie did a great job translating the peculiarities of a child’s imagination. It shows a child’s vision of a story she is being told, complete with updates along the way as the details of the story changes. And did I mention it features my American TV boyfriend?!? After the show we all went out for dinner to Chino Latino. I thought the food was decent, but we had a bad server tonight. But the company was good, and we all went out to Drink for, well, some drinks. So a good start to the weekend, time with friends, an interesting movie and good conversation.

Staycation all I ever wanted

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I took time off from work this last week, and since I spent the last few weekends flying I thought it would be nice if Brain and I spent time together exploring the local area. We decided to call it our staycation. Memorial weekend was deck opener down at Mel and Dave’s place. We spent Saturday, Sunday and Monday in a state of extreme relaxation and friendly camaraderie.

Highlights

Tuesday Brian and I went to Muffuletta for lunch, tooled around the Milton square area and then went over to Como Park for the Zoo and Conservatory. After the zoo we went to see the new Narnia movie. It was just so-so. Here are some pics from the zoo:

Monkey

Funny shot

Thursday we went to eat at Cafe Twenty Eight in Linden Hills and then went to see A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Guthrie.  The show was entertaining, the costumes and set were great, but I guess in the future I would like to see plays that I have never been exposed to before.  The new Guthrie theater is an interesting space to explore, I would recommend going at least once to the new site.  Both Brain and I highly recommend Cafe Twenty Eight, we love both it and the whole Linden Hills neighborhood.

Friday we went to the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley.  Word to the wise, if you go during the week, go after 13:00 and you will miss the school kids [who are very loud].  Here are some pictures:

Seahorse

After the zoo we went to the Chatterbox Pub and then we went over to the Witch’s Hat Tower in Prospect Park.  Last Friday was the one time a year the public is allowed to climb to the top of the tower.

Witch's Tower

Tower

It was interesting, but the interior of the tower [originally a water tower] is smelly and the narrow staircase was not conducive to hundreds of people going up and down.

Saturday we went to Figlio in Uptown for lunch, wandered a bit, waited out the hail storm in Calhoun Square and then saw the show at Dudley Riggs Brave New Workshop.  I’ve said it before, if you want to have a good laugh, the Brave New Workshop is a great place to go.  Also if you are in Uptown, and like the stationary as much as I do, check out Letterbox Creative, a neat little shop.

hermit crabIt has been a long week. After what seemed like an eternity of travel I arrived home from Jersey late last Tuesday night, and I just haven’t been in the mood to post for the last week. Work is starting to seem like, well, work. Good thing I have a training class tomorrow, something different to think about for the day. So want a recap of my week? No? Tough.

Since I don’t do well sleeping in beds other than my own I was super tired once I got back into town. I’m talking going to bed at 6 PM tired. But luckily after a few days of that I was back on track, just in time for the weekend! Friday night Brian and I got to go out to eat and then to a movie with our friend Sue. Sue is good company and I even got to meet her cats, one of which easily beats my cuddle lump Elliot in the size department. We went to see Iron Man, which despite the good reviews I was unsure about. I don’t know about you, but movies featuring Robert Downey Jr. as the lead worry me. And I am not big on non-mutant Marvel superheroes. But this time the critics were correct, it was a decent film that held our interest throughout. Dinner was good too, except for me dripping almost every course onto my shirt. Thank goodness for Sue and her trusty Tide pen!

Saturday night I had tickets for Lily Tomlin’s appearance at St Kate’s. Rachel M agreed to be my date. We started out the evening at the Chatterbox Pub in St. Paul. The food was pretty good, I didn’t get to try any drinks, but the atmosphere was great. Check out their site, they even have games for guests to play. I was a little disappointed in the main event. I had seen Lily Tomlin in the Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe years ago, and about half of the show this night was a reprise of characters from that show. Rachel mentioned she would have liked to have seen more of the Edith Ann character. The best part of the evening in my opinion was the Q&A session after the main performance.

Sunday I felt down again, so I called over to the folks and made my excuses. Don’t feel bad my Mom was sleeping anyhow. I then spent the whole day watching episode after episode of Corner Gas as I now have the first five seasons. Great show, very Canadian, very charming, often quite funny. If you ever do see it, ponder which character you are most like. I think I am a sort of cross between Emma and Brent. I have actually been watching episodes every night since Sunday and am now ready to start on the fourth season.

And now for something you’ll really like

satyrRandom crap.

It has been a serene past few days. Well in a sense. Friday at work was just weird, since it seemed like my time was just being eaten up by other people. There are too many nebulous tasks that need to be done. The plant itself is running fine, but is way behind in program development. There is the feeling that everything will just work until it doesn’t and then the fire fighting has to start. I’ll ask someone who handles fixing a particular piece of equipment when it needs repair and am told “Oh Larry handles that.” Then when I ask who else can fix it I am told, well no one. And I am thinking, well if Larry gets hit by a bus do we just have to close down shop then?!? We really need to get training and preventative maintenance programs in place so we can avoid future problems not just react to them. I guess that is what they hired me for isn’t it? Gonna be a long road, but hopefully rewarding. Oh and I am taking some sort of “strengths finder” training next week. It is a prerequisite to taking any other career development courses that the company offers. I had to do an online assessment of my strengths and they were as follows [their one word definitions, mine in parenthetical]: Learner [love to learn], Input [inquisitive], Relator [need to know more about people you already know...share etc.], Strategic [ok I am just gonna tell it like it is...Manipulative is what i think this means] and Achiever [drive to get things done]. So I convinced my trainer/ally/only other person I have met that thinks like me at work/friend Cheryl to sign up for the class as well since she has not taken it and the others signed up are all in some sort of accounting roles. Four hour training course with accountant types…I need another critical person [with a personality] in the room or I will definitely go mad.

So where was I oh yeah, lot of time working on fires on Friday at work and not a lot of time working on long range goals. But I managed to get a computer into that old lab and networked so my staff can stop entering test results on paper and, well, as I told one of the lab techs, “Welcome to the 20th century!” The lab is probably too small for a LIMS system, so I don’t think it will ever make it to the 21st century.

Friday night Brain and I went out to see my folks and play some Pinochle [OMFSM I spelled that correctly first try! Woot!]. We stopped on the way to bring them their favorite pizza, from Latuff’s in Plymouth, only to find they thought it had gone downhill since the last time they had it. End of an era I tell you! The upside is my car still smells like very tasty pizza, but not overwhelmingly so. We had a great time with the folks and playing with Mercury. I really think when Brain and I get the old house sold and a new one bought, and Mercury back with us, the folks will be getting their own dog. And some disturbing news too, looks like Mom has to have a needle biopsy for a lump found during her last checkup. I am really hoping it is benign. I know my father came to terms with his cancer very quickly, since he figured he would develop it ever since his father died of his, but I don’t know how he or Mom would cope with her being diagnosed with cancer. Or how I would cope for that matter. Over the last few years I have come to appreciate my folks more all the time, and I want a lot more time to spend with them. That is one reason I am glad Brain and I are settling in the Twin Cities for awhile.

Saturday was sort of Anniversary celebration. Brian and I went over to Wayzata to try a place called Patrick’s Bakery and Bistro. Mom had mentioned how she liked some of the pastry from there, and as we are missing our Daube’s fix, we decided to check it out. We even had lunch at the bistro. Brian had a burger [figures doesn't it?] and I had a chicken pot pie puff pastry thingie. But first off I had the French soup! And I highly recommend it! It was outstanding, even if it was served hotter than hell. The service was great, but the room is loud, it might have been where we were sitting in it, but we couldn’t even have a conversation with each other, and there were only about 10 other diners in the joint. Other than the soup the food was alright, but nothing to rave about. We then hit the bakery case and bought a little of everything to take home. And over the course of the day we have decided it is only ok. So if you are in the area try the place out by all means, but don’t make a special trip. To cap off the celebration we watched the last Torchwood episode of the season and the first Doctor Who episode of the season. And I am super happy to see Catherine Tate on Doctor Who again, she brings a much needed touch of laughter back to the show. And after that last Torchwood we needed the funny [and that is all I am gonna spoil - sorry Mary].

Alice shortSomething you don’t want when you are preparing to move, food poisoning, but I will come back to that in a bit. Friday was a great day. My last day at work was busy, but I made it through alright. It was gratifying to be the recipient of a great many well wishes for my future. I am going to miss a lot of people from there, if not the job itself. Friday night Tanya ended her Minnesota trip with a short visit to the folks in Rochester. It was great to get to see her, as well as Mara and Karla. It seemed rather short though, as we had to be in Minneapolis the next morning at 10 AM to look for an apartment. We decided to go with one at the Gates at Carlson Center. Right before we signed the paperwork we went out to lunch with the gal giving us the apartment tour at place called El Azteca. Remember this as it becomes important later on in our story. So we were done by early afternoon and decided to go on over to our friend Shari’s place since she was hasting a McGuyver party that evening. Both Brian and I were worn out, so he took a little nap over at Mary’s apartment at the beginning of the party, and once he was awake, I took a little nap. Brian woke me up around 10 PM for us to head on home.

Once we got into the car I mentioned that I was feeling a little queasy, but thought I would be ok for the drive. Then we got a little further down the road and I thought we should stop at our normal gas stop in Invergrove Heights so I could use the facilities. After that i thought I would be fine, but let Brain know that I would warn him if I needed him to pull the car over for any reason. I don’t know how much further we got down the road before I was frantically letting him know that we needed to pull over to the side of the road NOW! According to Brain he was in the left hand lane, and had to floor the accelerator in order to pass some guy pacing him in the right, so he could whip into the right lane and pull over to the side. All I can remember is what seemed like five liters of fluids coming out of my mouth at a very high velocity…twice. Brain was a champ, at one point trying to clean me up with some napkins we had handy, that is until I told him “not yet.” The only positive thing I have to say about the whole vomiting experience was that I felt about 300% better after it, but that still left me feeling about 600% worse than normal. I spent Sunday in bed and the bathroom, I now weigh seven pounds less than I did on Friday and the first thing I was able to eat since Saturday night was at about 10 PM Sunday.

We are having carpeting installed this morning, and the Junk-B-Gone guys have already been by to pick up some old nasty furniture for the dump. I have already reserved a U-haul for the minor amount of furniture we are moving into the new apartment. Once the carpet installers are gone I will go get some boxes. Dad is coming down in the morning to help me pack things up, and hopefully this Sunday will be the only set back for the move.

Brian is in the middle of finals for his second to last semester of grad school right now, and he is having a tough time of it. Please send him your encouragement. His blog is Lady with a Hat if you want to leave him a message!

I love you Brain and I know you can do it!
