Laptop stories

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Well I finally have my own laptop!  Of course it is a hand me down, as it wasn’t working properly when Brain needed it, so we ordered him new and sent this one in for warranty work.  Well it came back after having the monitor fixed but then still didn’t work totally properly.  So I was trying to install some software and couldn’t.  Come to find the cd drive was not working.  After trying to fix it myself for about 6 hours I decided to call the warranty line, they said they would ship me out a new drive.  And I had it at my house the very next day!  So if you are in the market for a laptop, you might want to look at Lenovo.  The laptop itself has had some problems, but other friends have had them in the past without many problems, and they really came through quickly with the hardware fix!

Haunts and Whores

Well the draw this Halloween in my neighborhood was fairly limited, but some of the kids were very cute! Here is a breakdown of the costumes:

  • Two princesses [with mittens]
  • Two teens with, well just pillowcases
  • one scream masked kid
  • a superhero ala Robin
  • girl zombie
  • knight
  • power ranger
  • ninja
  • alligator [ninja's little brother and both were adorable]
  • football player
  • wizard
  • leopard
  • witch
  • skeleton [20 yr old]
  • whore-like school girl [20 yr old]

So only seventeen hits for candy, but believe me Mercury had plenty of excitement tonight and every trick or treat-er was very polite! I’m glad I didn’t just turn out the lights and hide. You know for Rochester my neighborhood is really rather nice. Hope you all enjoyed the holiday in some way!

I’m not fat. I’m filthy!

Next time you feel a bit overweight take this little factoid to heart: There are more microbial cells in the human body than human cells. Too bad the fat cells still make so much weight.

Freakin Hardware!

Well I was really pumped when I got off work today and I had planned on writing a few posts. Unfortunately, I thought I could try and load a program on the laptop before I did all that. Now six hours later I only have a nice error filled logfile to show for it. I am adding a new curse word to my vocabulary, “Lenovo!”

Killer underwear

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

I subscribe to a food safety listserv that send clipping of relevant news stories to me daily. I think I just came upon my favorite. This article on the “12 Germiest places in your life” isn’t really before dinner reading material but it does contain some good information. It also includes my favorite quotation for the week: “there’s about a gram of feces in every pair of dirty underwear.”

I am pathetic, and here is one reason why.

I am totally enthralled with a new “medical” drama on ABC called “The Practice.” I swear I only started watching it because it was on after “Pushing Daisies”, but I am now all embroiled with the drama. Unrequited love, two divorced parents working together, cute guys. Why are the interactions in scripted workplaces so much more interesting than where I work? Oh and have you seen my new TV cutie from Pushing Daisies?

Retail therapy?

So big news today, one more step on my way down the path of old man-ville, I bought a leaf vacuum with attachments to bag the mulch right into a trash can. With the back problems I’ve had lately I just can’t stand [bend] to bag a whole driveway full of leaves again this year. In the process of getting this neat new toy I ended up going to the southern part of mighty Rochester to the new commercial development. I started off at the old Home Depot in the north end, but after looking for someone to answer my questions for about 10 minutes and not feeling like interrupting the various conversations between the employees that were ignoring me, I skipped out and went to Lowes. After 5 minutes in Lowes I had a friendly staff member helping me pick out the equipment I needed! Then I decided to check out the new Super Target down south. Whoa! You ever feel like you have somehow walked into a world just a few degrees off kilter from normal? This new Target was not set up like any Target I had been in previously, and some of their choices were odd. I don’t think if I was looking for storage containers and saran wrap I would normally think to look between a deodorant isle and the pet food isle. But is is neat to be in a new store, all the employees are so friendly. I even think the gal behind the deli counter was flirting with me a bit while getting me a pound of turkey. I thought about saying, “Thanks but I only really like to get my meat from men,” but I managed to keep that as an inside voice comment. My only real complaint? Who designs the parking lots for these big box stores?!? I was halfway across the lot before I realized there was only one exit and I had already passed it. Parking for something like 250 cars and only one exit.

Please help…

Last year at about this time Brain and I bought some Godiva chocolates for his family for the holidays. While we were at it we purchased some for ourselves as well. We bought 15 pieces from the “G” collection. These were considered “special edition” chocolates and only available after November 1st of 2006. I thought it would be a great idea for us to rate what we thought of each piece. As time went by and I still didn’t have a site up I figured that I wouldn’t have a reason to post the information. But today I received a catalog in the mail from Godiva and once again they will be selling this collection starting November 1st. Check it out here after that date. So over the next few days I’ll post our experience with “the ultimate fusion of art and chocolate.” Here is the “fancy” box:

And our first subject “Thai coconut”:

This piece had virtually no scent. It did have a very creamy mouthfeel, but not much flavor until you hit the actual pieces of coconut in the filling. But even then pretty much a disappointment.
